Scholar-in-Residence Program

CRI created its scholar-in-residence program initially to focus on enhancing the quality of service provided by the firm’s accounting and auditing (A&A) practice.  The program since has expanded to encompass tax, forensic accounting and firm-wide skills training, including its unique Leadership Academy.  Currently, CRI benefits from the expertise of four PhD Scholars-in-Residence who facilitate training at all levels within the firm.  CRI’s executive committee utilizes these Scholars to communicate consistent messaging and help implement the quality control process throughout the firm’s various practice areas.

Steve Grice, PhD, CPA, an associate professor of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the former director of the School of Accountancy at Troy University, serves as the Accounting & Auditing Scholar-in-Residence. His role not only includes the development of accounting and auditing training curriculum for the firm and serving as a technical resource, but it also includes working as a part of the quality control committee with a focus on quality control standardization and consistency throughout the practice offices.

Frank Messina, DBA, CPA and chair of the department of accounting and information systems at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, serves as the Tax Scholar-in-Residence. In addition to serving as a technical resource for tax issues, he is charged with developing consistency and standardization throughout the firm’s tax practice. Dr. Messina is also well known for his expertise regarding cooperative taxation and has served on the national education committee of the National Society of Cooperative Accountants (NSAC) for over 15 years.

Tommie Singleton, PhD, serves as the Scholar-in-Residence for information technology and has recently been appointed to the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Information Technology Executive Committee (ITEC). His CRI responsibility areas encompass IT audit, forensic accounting and SAS 70 audits.  Dr. Singleton is also an associate professor in the Accounting and Information Systems Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and co-author of the college textbook, IT Auditing and Assurance. He is currently completing his third year as editor of the Information Systems Audit and Control Journal and author of its “IT Audit Basics” column, which is published six times a year.

CRI’s fourth scholar-in-residence, Molly Epstein, PhD, is an associate professor in the practice of management communication department at the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. Through her leadership and direction, the firm developed the Annual Leadership Academy, which focuses on helping employees become better professionals. The first course employees complete at the academy outlines CRI’s culture, vision, and values, while other courses highlight professional skills such as teamwork, professional communication, and coaching and mentoring.
